Official Information

On May 10, due to heavy rainfall in Tashkent, 23 requests were received regarding water accumulation at various locations across 8 districts of the city.

The requests by district were recorded as follows:

  • Mirzo Ulugbek district — 6 locations;
  • Yashnabad district — 3 locations;
  • Shaykhantahur district — 4 locations;
  • Mirobod district — 3 locations;
  • Yakkasaray district — 1 location;
  • Olmazor district — 2 locations;
  • Chilanzar district — 2 locations;
  • Yunusabad district — 2 locations.

According to relevant services, the amount of precipitation on May 10 reached 35 mm. Most of this volume fell within less than two hours, exceeding half of the average monthly rainfall norm.

For comparison: Tashkent’s existing rainwater drainage system is designed to handle up to 20 mm of precipitation per day. According to the approved master plan, the system’s capacity is to be gradually increased to 36 mm per day.

Thus, during the heaviest rainfall, the city’s drainage infrastructure faced a sharp and short-term load close to the design parameters outlined in the master plan for the future.

In some areas, the volume of incoming water simultaneously exceeded the throughput capacity of the existing irrigation networks and pipes. As a result, rainwater accumulated in several locations.

In addition, local factors complicated the situation in some places: clogging of drainage elements with waste, unauthorized structures, and the blocking of ditches and irrigation systems for parking or other economic needs. While each individual case may seem minor, such interventions collectively have a direct impact on the functioning of the entire city drainage system.

To promptly eliminate the consequences, specialists and teams from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, drainage-collector systems, canals, utility services, and other relevant organizations were mobilized. More than 60 units of special equipment were deployed.

Thanks to the measures taken, all cases of water accumulation were fully resolved within one hour.

Working groups conducted an initial assessment at each location and identified necessary actions. In particular, the following measures are under consideration:

— Construction of irrigation systems at 5 locations; — Re-examination of one area together with designers; — Installation of 3 additional culverts; — Installation of 800 mm diameter pipes at one site and 500 mm diameter pipes at several other locations; — Installation of additional pumping units and increased water discharge capacity; — Installation of 6 additional rainwater grates; — Increasing the throughput capacity of certain sections of the system.

Work will continue on a site-specific basis. The main focus will be on the gradual modernization of the rainwater drainage system, increasing the capacity of problem areas, and reducing the risk of local flooding in the future.
